I keep getting canker sores on my lip, down by my gums. They hurt so bad. Is there any way to get them to go away faster?
Thanks,
Layne, Destin, Florida
Layne,
There are multiple causes for cankers, otherwise known as mouth ulcers. A few of these are:
- viral infection,
- hormonal changes,
- stress,
- lack of vitamins and minerals,
- food allergies, such as tomatoes, milk, chocolate, and walnuts,
- eating a lot of citrus fruits,
- and other unknown causes.
Typical cankers go away in about ten days. Some larger cankers may take a little longer, but, unfortunately, you just have to wait them out. There isn’t a medication that will make them go away, but you can relieve the symptoms. Rinsing with a warm salt water solution can help relieve some of the pain and irritation. A topical antihistamine may also be soothing. Avoiding spicy or hot food is a good idea as that may only make them feel worse, especially if they are the underlying cause of your cankers.
Aside from causing discomfort, most mouth ulcers are harmless and go away without incident.
