Can I use Invisalign instead of a mouthguard for football?

Football season has started and we have our first game this month. My coach said we always have to wear a mouth guard. I’m supposed to be getting my Invisalign next week. Can I just wear my Invisalign in the place of my mouth guard because I don’t think I’m supposed to have my Invisalign out that long.

Thanks,
Ryan, Idaho

Ryan,

That’s great thinking, trying to get a two-for-one and fit the bill for both straightening your teeth while protecting them. Unfortunately, it’s too good to be true. Invisalign can’t substitute for a mouth guard.

Mouth guards are built to absorb shock to your teeth and to protect them from being broken. Invisalign can only straighten your teeth, not protect them.

You were right about needing to keep your Invisalign on your teeth. It works best when they are worn at all times except eating. If you are diligent at wearing your Invisalign at all others times except during your football and eating though, your treatment shouldn’t be affected too much.

If you have other concerns about your Invisalign, bring it up with your dentist before you get them next week.

We wish you well in both getting a great smile and your football season.
