My job closed down and I’ve been out of work for about six months. A few weeks ago, I started getting a toothache. Now, the side of my face is swollen. I have no money. I don’t even have a car at the moment. I talked to a couple of dentists and they said that they don’t take payments. I don’t know what to do. Are there any helps for someone in my situation?

Dear Paula,
You are in a tough situation. I’m sorry that you are going through this. I am also sorry that the two dentists you called were unwilling to work with you.
Because you have a dental emergency, I feel confident you will be able to find a dentist willing to work with you. One thing you could do is call your local dental association and see if they have a dental charity in your area. Most communities have at least one dentist willing to do charity work.
If by chance yours does not, it doesn’t mean you can’t get help. I would make some more calls. However, don’t just do it randomly. Start by calling dentists who advertise as affordable dentists. They are usually among the most compassionate. They keep their prices lower in order to help those who struggle financially. They often are willing to work with patients on payments as well.
What you don’t want to do is leave it. Five to ten people die every year from tooth infections left untreated. Be aware that antibiotics will not solve the infection. When a tooth is infected, eventually the pulp inside the tooth dies, which means the medication can’t even reach the infection because there is no blood flow.
You will find a local dentist to help you. I’m certain.
