Why am I drooling with my new lip piercing?

Posted on July 15, 2015 by writeradmin.

I got my lip pierced recently and it seems that I drool a lot more now than I did before. I typically sleep on my back and I don’t have any allergies, so I’m not stuffy. Do you think this increase in drooling is from the piercing? Will it go away?

– Marcus, Seattle, WA

Marcus,

It’s unfortunate that you didn’t know before you got your lip pierced, but any time you get an oral piercing, it stimulates the salivary glands, which would explain your increased drooling. It may dissipate over time, but it will likely continue to be a problem for you for the duration of your wearing the piercing.

This is just one of the risks of oral piercings. Other risks are:

  • Trouble eating and speaking. Sometimes, because your piercing may not let your lips close all the way, it can interfere with eating and affect your speech.
  • Inflammation. It’s not uncommon for there to be inflammation at the site of the piercing right after it’s pierced, but if it continues to be inflamed, it may indicate an infection and needs to be treated by a medical doctor.
  • Tooth wear. Depending on where the piercing is, you may notice wear on teeth touching the piercing.
  • Gum irritation. Because lip rings rub against the gums, it may cause the gums to be inflamed and even recede, which can lead to long-term damage. Not only lip piercings but cheek piercings and tongue piercings also may put you at higher risk for periodontal disease.
  • Bacterial infection. Our mouths naturally have bacteria and, according to the American Dental Association, those with oral piercings, who create an opening with that piercing, are at risk for a bacterial infection.
  • Metal allergy. Some people may experience an allergy to certain metals contained in the piercing jewelry. Allergic reactions can be life-threatening.

  • In order to maintain good oral health, be sure to brush and floss daily, keep the piercing site clean and well maintained and visit your dentist regularly.
